09/27/14 Area Girl Scout Campfire and Sing Along

We saw several familiar faces at this evening's girl scout campfire. The singing was fun and the s'mores were tasty!

One Daisy had the creative spirit before going!

Meeting #3 091814

The Girl Scouts got a little dirty helping make a flower garden for Mrs. Hartshorn and Eastwood.  While we couldn't find any daisies to plant this time of year, we did have tulip bulbs and mums.  We found an abundance of earthworms while we dug, a spider and a slug and I think we have a picture below of the world's tiniest earthworm!

Thanks for your help, girls!

The Daisies finished activities for the Blue Bucket Award.  We've discussed feelings, what we can say to make others feel good, what others say that make us feel good and the girls spread a little sunshine to loved ones and residents at a local nursing home with these cards. Thanks for your thoughtfulness!

09/13/14: Ronald McDonald House Breakfast Service Activity

Bright and early this morning the Girl Scouts and their families arrived at Morgantown's Ronald McDonald House. This organization provides free and discounted housing for the families of critically ill children including children recovering from surgeries, preemies and those with a variety of other conditions.

Girls, parents, and adult volunteers helped mix, bake, cook, chop and melon-ball for 2 hours.  It was a great service activity and more than one family said they would love to do this again.  Hollie heard that by the end of the day, the food had been eaten and the dozen families staying here were greatly appreciative of the wide variety of food made and donated.

All of us Girl Scouts sincerely thank everyone for your donation of time, money, food and good thoughts!

Meeting 2: 09/03/14

We had a fun meeting this Wednesday.  The Daisies were learning about the benefits of worm composting and we made our own worm farm from a plastic bin, shredded newspaper, a little dirt and a few hundred worms. Mrs. Hartshorn is allowing us to keep the bin at the school and we will add any food waste from our meetings to the farm. We discussed what foods are biodegradable and which are appropriate for the worm farm.

From shredding newspaper and sign decorating to meeting the worms and feeding them, there was something for everyone.  The meeting ended with a cute worm craft and a new song.

This week the Brownies took their meeting outside to work on their "Fair Play" and "Making Games" badges.  The girls played beach ball boogie counting how long they could keep the ball in the air.  The girls then changed the rules and took turns coming up with new games to play with the beach ball and each other!

We concluded our meeting with the girls receiving their Bridging certificate, Welcome to Brownies certificate and "Making Friends" certificate that they earned at the last meeting.

Almost all of the girls have also earned their "Girl Scout Promise" badge by reciting the promise on their own.

We're looking forward to our first service project at the Ronald McDonald House this Saturday!
